Pittsburgh Pirates pitching prospect Owen Kellington underwent Tommy John surgery on Wednesday morning, he announced on his Instagram account.

The operation was performed by Dr. Keith Meister, who recently performed knee surgery on Pirates catcher Jason Delay.

Kellington was selected by the Pirates in the fourth round of the 2021 draft out of high school in Vermont.

The 21-year-old did not pitch in a game this season but reached Low-A Bradenton last year, where he made 23 appearances/18 starts. Kellington went 1-3 with a 3.94 ERA and struck out 90 batters in 80 innings with the Marauders.

The right-hander made his professional debut with the FCL Pirates in 2022 and went on to make six appearances.

Kellington had been placed on the 60-day injured list on Apr. 8.

Based on the standard 14-16 month recovery timeframe, Kellington will miss all of 2024 and will be sidelined for at least the majority of next season.
