Pirates Recall Ryder Ryan, DFA Josh Fleming

The Pittsburgh Pirates have recalled right-handed reliever Ryder Ryan from Triple-A Indianapolis prior to Tuesday’s game against the Milwaukee Brewers. He takes the place of left-handed reliver Josh Fleming, who was designated for assignment.

This will be Ryan’s third stint with the Pirates on the season. He originally broke camp with the Pirates and made the club’s Opening Day roster.

The recently-turned 29-year-old totaled 12 innings across nine appearances through his first two stints to begin the year. He’s 1-0 with a 3.00 ERA, five walks and 13 strikeouts. Ryan recorded his first-career win against the Marlins in Miami on Mar. 29.

With Triple-A Indianapolis, Ryan has a 3.86 through five relief appearances.

Fleming had a strong start to the season but has struggled recently. In Monday’s win over the Brewers, he surrendered an eighth-inning grand slam to Jake Bauers and was charged with five earned runs (six total) in one-plus inning.

Fleming made 17 appearances with Pittsburgh on the season and went 1-1 with a 5.68 ERA and recorded one save. The Pirates signed him as a free agent during spring training.

The move leaves the Pirates with Aroldis Chapman as the lone left-handed relief option out of the bullpen.
