MLB Injury Report
ON IL means the player is on the injured list. For the Pittsburgh Pirates, that means the player is injured and not currently available on the active roster. The team can replace that player on the active roster while he is out.
10/15-DAY IL refers to MLB’s shorter injured list. Position players usually go on the 10-day injured list. Pitchers and two-way players go on the 15-day injured list. In both cases, the player is removed from the 26-man active roster but stays on the 40-man roster.
60-DAY IL means the player must miss at least 60 days. This is used for longer-term injuries. A player on the 60-day IL is removed from the 40-man roster while he is out, which gives the Pirates more roster flexibility.
When a Pirates player goes on the injured list, the team can call up or add another player to replace him on the active roster. The key difference is roster space. A 10-day or 15-day IL move opens an active roster spot. A 60-day IL move also opens a 40-man roster spot.
