Pirates Roster Moves: 40-Man Spot Cleared for McCutchen, Familiar Face Returns

The Pittsburgh Pirates officially added designated hitter Andrew McCutchen to the 40-man roster on Monday night.
McCutchen signed a one-year, $5 million deal to return 2025 for a third-straight season back in Pittsburgh and his 12th year overall with the Pirates.
To make room for McCutchen on the 40-man roster, the Pirates designated infielder Tristan Gray for assignment. Gray was claimed off waivers from the Oakland A’s on Halloween.
Gray, 28, was originally a 13th round pick by the Pirates in 2017. During the 2017-18 offseason, he was traded to the Tampa Bay Rays as part of the return for outfielder Corey Dickerson.
Gray totaled 17 games in the big leagues over the past two seasons between the A’s, Rays and Miami Marlins. He went 5 for 33 with a double and a home run between the three teams. In 112 games at Triple-A last season, Gray slashed .251/.322/.467 with 25 doubles, four triples, 19 home runs and 64 RBIs.
Pirates Bring Back Ryder Ryan
The Pirates are in agreement with right-handed reliever Ryder Ryan on a minor-league deal that includes an invite to spring training, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post.
Ryder spent the 2024 season with the organization and often shuffled between the big leagues and Triple-A Indianapolis. In 15 appearances with the Pirates, the 29-year-old went 1-0 with a 5.66 ERA and struck out 17 batters in 20.2 innings. With Indianapolis, Ryan went 2-2 with a 4.61 ERA and three saves in 32 appearances out of the bullpen.
