Andrew McCutchen Returns to Pirates on One-Year Deal
As expected, Andrew McCutchen is returning to the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2025 for what will be his 12th season with the team.
McCutchen has agreed to a one-year, $5 million deal to return to the Pirates, a source confirmed to Pittsburgh Baseball Now. It’s the same contract McCutchen received from the Pirates each of the last two offseasons.
The 38-year-old played in 120 games for the Pirates this past season and slashed .232./328/.411 with 18 doubles, a triple, 20 home runs and 50 RBIs while serving as the team’s primary designated hitter.
Among the milestones McCutchen reached in 2024 was slugging the 300th home run of his career in April.
One of the most accomplished players in franchise history, McCutchen owns a .284/.375/.475 batting line with 329 doubles, 45 triples, 235 home runs, 818 RBIs and 185 stolen bases in 1,578 games played with Pittsburgh.
In his Pirates’ career, McCutchen won an MVP award, was named an All-Star five times, won four Silver Sluggers, a Gold Glove and the prestigious Roberto Clemente Award. He also helped guide the Pirates to their last three playoff appearances from 2013-15.
McCutchen is fourth on the Pirates’ all-time list in home runs, fifth in extra-base hits and walks and is in the top 10 in games played, RBIs, hits and steals.
Additionally, McCutchen leads all active players with 2,127 career games played. He also ranks second in runs scored (1,239), walked (1,116), total bases (3,638), extra-base hits (798) and is third with 2,152 career hits.
Though the 2013 National League MVP is in the twilight of his career, he’s proven to be a valuable contributor with the bat in his hands. Last season, McCutchen was third on the team with 20 home runs and finished fourth in RBIs and OPS.
McCutchen’s days as an outfielder all all but over — he logged 21 innings as a right fielder in 2024. But expect to see him to continue to get more reps at DH this coming season in another year in the black and gold.
No corresponding move is necessary on the Pirates’ 40-man roster.
