Pirates Prospect Watch: Solometo Continues to Pitch Well in Altoona

Pirates' left-handed pitching prospect Anthony Solometo shows off his funky wind-up.

The Pittsburgh Pirates made Anthony Solometo the 37th overall pick in the 2021 MLB Draft and so far, the Pirates’ prospect is rewarding them.



The left-handed Solometo has emerged as one of the Pirates’ top pitching prospects and has been playing at a high level this season.

The 20-year-old was off to a hot start with High-A Greensboro and has been pitching well ever since getting bumped up to Double-A Altoona. His success continued on Thursday with another solid outing.

Solometo was joined by these Pirates’ prospects who played well on Thursday.

Indianapolis (46-52)

RF Ryan Vilade

  • Game stats: 2 for 4, one double, one RBI, one run, one walk
  • Season stats: .272/.389/.387, 16 doubles, two triples, four home runs, 33 RBIs, six steals, 79 games

2B Domingo Leyba

  • Game stats: 2 for 5, one double, one RBI
  • Season stats: .400/.400/.500, one double, one RBI, two games

Vilade and Leyba’s efforts weren’t enough for Indianapolis, who fell 9-5 to the Louisville Bats.

Pirates prospect Vinny Capra went 1 for 4 and has hits in seven of his last eight games played.

Altoona (44-45)

LHP Anthony Solometo

  • Game stats: 5.0 innings, five hits, two runs, one walk, five strikeouts
  • Season stats: 2-2, 3.14 ERA, 10er/28.2ip, 25 hits, six walks, 33 strikeouts, six appearances/six starts

3B Jackson Glenn

  • Game stats: 1 for 3, one home run, three RBIs, two runs, one HBP
  • Season stats: .259/.306/.431, four doubles, two home runs, 10 RBIs, two steals, 14 games

Glenn’s three-run homer backed a solid start from Solometo as Altoona defeated the Harrisburg Senators 5-3.

Pirates prospect Mike Jarvis went 3 for 4 with a pair of steals in the win. Jarvis is hitting .474 (9 for 19) through his first five games in Double-A.

Greensboro (47-43)

LF Will Matthiessen

  • Game stats: 2 for 4, one home run, one double, four RBIs, one run
  • Season stats: .247/.332/.455, 13 doubles, two triples, 12 home runs, 49 RBIs, one steal, 69 games

INF Jack Brannigan

  • Game stats: 2 for 4, one home run, one triple, one RBI, one run
  • Season stats: .286/.348/.571, one double, one triple, one home run, four RBIs, one steal, five games

Matthiessen and Brannigan both had huge games for Greensboro in their 6-5 win over the Winston-Salem Dash.

Pirates prospect Tres Gonzalez homered, walked twice and scored a pair of runs for the Grasshoppers.

Bradenton (53-39)

INF Jesus Castillo

  • Game stats: 1 for 2, one home run, one RBI, one run, two walks
  • Season stats: .221/.389/.263, seven doubles, one triple, one home run, 31 RBIs, 23 steals, 87 games

SS Yordany De Los Santos

  • Game stats: 1 for 4, one walk
  • Season stats: .228/.323/.363, three doubles, one triple, one home run, seven RBIs, three steals, 17 games

Castillo hit his first homer of the season for Bradenton but the Marauders were dismantled 17-3 by the St. Lucie Mets.

De Los Santos reached base twice and Pirates prospect Termarr Johnson drew to walks.
