Pirates Activate Quinn Priester, Option Edward Olivares; Bednar to Begin Rehab
The Pittsburgh Pirates have announced a series of roster moves ahead of Tuesday’s game against the Milwaukee Brewers.
Right-hander pitcher Quinn Priester has been activated from the 15-day injured list while outfielder Edward Olivares was optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis.
Priester had been on the injured list since June 6 with a right lat injury. The 23-year-old has made six starts with the Pirates this season and is 0-5 with a 4.83 ERA.
The Pirates were in need of another starting pitcher as left-hander Bailey Falter was placed on the injured list with left triceps tendinitis and Jared Jones landed on the IL earlier in the Pirates’ last homestand. Jones was replaced in the rotation by Luis Ortiz.
Olivares has played only sparingly this season, even more so in recent weeks. In 55 games on the season, he’s slashed .224/.291/.333 with four doubles, five home runs and 23 RBIs. Olivares has not recorded an extra-base hit since May 26 and has hit just .190 with a .461 OPS since then.
Additionally, closer David Bednar will begin a rehab assignment with Double-A Altoona. Bednar was placed on the IL on June 23 with a left oblique strain. In 34 games with the Pirates this season, the right-hander is 3-3 with a 5.17 ERA and 16 saves.
Left-handed relief pitcher Ryan Borucki will continue his rehab assignment with Altoona. Borucki has missed most of the season with left triceps inflammation.
And finally, left-hander Justin Bruihl, who was designated for assignment on Sunday, has cleared waivers and accepted an outright assignment to Indianapolis.
