The Pittsburgh Pirates have placed left-handed starting pitcher Bailey Falter on the 15-day injured list with left triceps tendinitis. Falter left Saturday’s start against the New York Mets in the third inning.

To take his place on the active roster, the Pirates selected the contract of right-hander Brent Honeywell Jr. from Triple-A Indianapolis.  Left-handed pitcher Justin Bruihl was designated for assignment to get Honeywell on the 40-man roster.

Additionally, the Pirates activated catcher Henry Davis from the 7-day concussion injured list and optioned him to Triple-A.

Falter is the second Pirates’ starter this week to land on the injured list, along with Jared Jones (right lat strain).

Falter has made 17 starts with the Pirates this year and is 4-7 with a 4.08 ERA. He’s third on the team with 90.1 innings pitched.

The Pirates signed Honeywell as a minor-league free agent in the offseason and the 29-year-old has spent the season with Indianapolis. He’s totaled 39 innings and went 1-3 with a 4.85 ERA and seven saves.

Honeywell has made 43 appearances in the major leagues between the Tampa Bay Rays, San Diego Padres and Chicago White Sox. In his big-league career, he’s 2-4 with a 5.08 ERA.

The Rays selected Honeywell in the second round of the 2014 MLB Draft. He was once considered one of the top pitching prospects in baseball before a series of arm injuries derailed his career.

The Pirates signed Bruihl to a major-league contract last month and he posted a 9.53 ERA in seven appearances.

Davis was placed on the injured list on June 15 and the 2021 first-overall pick had been rehabbing with Indianapolis at the time he was optioned. Davis has appeared in 29 games with the Pirates this season and slashed .153/.267/.235 with four doubles, a home run and five RBIs.
