MLB Offseason Round-Up: Red Sox Eyeing Montgomery, Cashman’s Comments
With the 2023 GM Meetings underway, MLB offseason rumors are starting to swirl.
There was some early buzz surrounding left-handed starter Jordan Montgomery, according to MLB.com’s Jon Morosi. He reports that the Boston Red Sox have contacted Montgomery’s representation.
The Red Sox will be looking to upgrade their starting rotation this MLB offseason, and Montgomery is one of the better starters available. Montgomery helped lead the Rangers to the first World Series title after being acquired in a midseason trade with the Cardinals. The 30-year-old went 10-11 with a 3.20 ERA in 32 regular season starts on the season.
Morosi also reported that the Reds are getting trade inquiries on second baseman Jonathan India. India provides an alternative to a relatively weak free agent market at second base.
India has spent the last three seasons in Cincinnati after debuting in 2021, when he was named the National League Rookie of the Year. For his career, India has hit .255 with a .769 OPS, 73 doubles, 48 home runs and 171 RBIs in 372 games.
Among the teams who could be looking for upgrades at second base include the Mariners, Marlins, White Sox, Tigers, Red Sox and Pirates.
At the GM meetings, Yankees general manager Brian Cashman created a stir with some comments. Among what was said, was that he feels the Yankees are “pretty [expletive] good.” He also mentioned that New York has the smallest analytical department in the A.L. East.
"I think we're pretty f—ing good, personally, and I'm proud of our people"

Brian Cashman pushes back on the notion that the Yankees are an "analytically-driven" organization:
"No one is doing their deep dives, they're just throwing bulls— and accusing us of being run analytically. To be said we're guided by analytics as a driver is a lie." pic.twitter.com/ru6gAYc0Cf

Big league managers are starting to round-out their coaching staffs for 2024. The Nationals are hiring Miguel Cairo to serve as bench coach under Dave Martinez, per Mike Mayer of Metsmerized Online. The White Sox are hiring Marcus Thames as hitting coach, according to Robert Murray of Fansided.
The Yankees, in search of their own hitting coach, have offered the job to James Rowson, reports the New York Post’s Joel Sherman.
