Pirates Option Slumping Henry Davis, Activate Yasmani Grandal
The Pittsburgh Pirates have shuffled their catching situation, optioning Henry Davis to Triple-A Indianapolis. Veteran backstop Yasmani Grandal has been activated off the 10-day injured list and added to the active roster.
Davis appeared in 23 games to begin the season with the Pirates while handling the primary catching duties for most of the season.
Despite the frequent playing time, Davis has struggled in his second season in the big leagues. He put together a .162/280/.206 slash with three doubles, four RBIs and no home runs.
Defensively, Davis haw saw his workload behind the plate skyrocket after catching just two innings in his debut season in 2023. The 24-year-old has posted minus-four defensive runs save and has caught 27% of attempted base stealers.
Grandal, meanwhile, wrapped up a nine-game rehab stint with Indianapolis. With the Indians, he hit .257 with a .716 OPS, two doubles, a home run and 11 RBIs.
The 35-year-old appeared in only two games during spring training and was placed on the injured list prior to Opening Day. He had been sidelined with left foot plantar fasciitis.
Grandal is not in the Pirates’ startling lineup for their matchup with the Colorado Rockies on Friday night. Joey Bart will be behind the plate and is batting eighth.
