Chris Sale, MLB offseason

This is one in a series of daily articles highlighting the latest news and notes from the MLB offseason.

Just before the new year, the Atlanta Braves made a trade with the Boston Red Sox. They landed veteran left-hander Chris Sale in exchange for young infielder Vaugh Grissom.

Now, the Braves have signed Sale to an extension, keeping him in Atlanta through at least the 2025 season. Sale’s two-year deal is for $38 million and comes with an $18 million club option for the 2026 season.

Last year in Boston, Sale made 20 starts and went 6-5 with a 4.30 ERA/3.80 FIP in just over 100 innings pitched. The 34-year-old has a lengthy resumé that includes seven All-Star selections, seven top-six finishes in the Cy Young race and a 2018 World Series ring.

Sale joins an impressive Braves’ rotation that includes Max Fried, Spencer Strider, Charlie Morton and Bryce Elder.

BADER BACK IN BIG APPLE

The New York Mets are in agreement with free agent outfielder Harrison Bader on a one-year, $10.5 million deal, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan and SNY’s Andy Martino.

Bader split the 2023 season between the New York Yankees and Cincinnati Reds and combined to hit .232 with a .622 OPS and 20 stolen bases in 98 games.

Though he struggled last season, Bader has proven to be a valuable player when healthy. He is a plus-runner and a solid defender capable of patrolling center field. He gives the Mets’ outfield a boost.
