The Cleveland Guardians have claimed right-handed pitcher Luis Oviedo off waivers from the Pirates, according to John Dreker of Pirates Prospects. Oviedo was DFA’d to make room on the roster for right-hander Chase De Jong.

Oviedo returns to his original organization in Cleveland. The Pirates acquired the the 22-year-old from the Mets, who selected Oviedo in the Rule 5 draft during the 2020-21 offseason.

As part of his Rule 5 requirements, Oviedo spent the 2021 season with the Pirates on the big league roster. He posted an 8.80 ERA/5.66 FIP across 22 appearances. He walked 26 and struck out 31.

Oviedo will now get added to the Guardians 40-man roster, and the Pirates lose a young pitcher who did have some upside.
