The Pittsburgh Pirates are expected to recall right-handed pitcher Roansy Contreras from Triple-A Indianapolis, according to a baseball source. He is likely to start Wednesday against the Boston Red Sox at PNC Park.

This will be the third stint with Pittsburgh this season for Contreras, who has made 12 appearances (nine starts). In 50 innings across those 12 appearances, Contreras is 3-2 with a 3.78 ERA and has struck out 50 batters.

Contreras’ first three games with the Pirates were all relief appearances in April during his first stint with the big league club.

After being optioned back to Triple-A and again recalled May 24, Contreras made nine starts for Pittsburgh. Outside of one outing in which the Milwaukee Brewers tagged him for seven runs in just 1.2 innings, Contreras fared well. Across his eight other starts, the young-righty posted a 2.43 ERA.

The Pirates then optioned the 22-year-old Contreras back to Indianapolis on July 7, where he has remained since.

In nine starts with Indianapolis this season, Contreras owns a 3.15 ERA and has limited opponents to a .227 batting average against.

General manager Ben Cherington hinted over the weekend that Contreras could be back in Pittsburgh before long, and it appears it may have been even sooner than anticipated.
