Yasmani Grandal to Begin Rehab Assignment
Pittsburgh Pirates catcher Yasmani Grandal will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Indianapolis on Tuesday.
Grandal, who the Pirates signed as a free agent in the offseason, has yet to appear in a game this season. He was placed on the 10-day injured list with left foot plantar fasciitis prior to the season opener in Miami.
The 35-year-old was limited to just two games during spring training where he went 0 for 3 with a pair of strikeouts.
Last season with the Chicago White Sox, Grandal hit .202 with a .570 OPS, seven doubles, five home runs and 27 RBIs in 99 games. The 12-year veteran carries a career .237/.347/.426 with 185 home runs in 1,235 games played.
Pirates’ catching duties are currently being held by Henry Davis and Joey Bart. Jason Delay, who is also on the 40-man roster, is currently on the injured list with left knee inflammation.
Indianapolis plays St. Paul at 6:05 ET. Left-hander Eric Lauer will start for the Indians.
