WATCH: Gene Lamont Discusses Return to Pirates’ Staff

For the first time since 2000, Gene Lamont was back in the Pittsburgh Pirates’ dugout wearing the black and gold.
The Pirates announced over the weekend that Lamont was hired for a third stint with the team to join manager Don Kelly’s staff.
Lamont served as a Pirates’ coach under then-manager Jim Leyland from 1986-91. After serving as manager for the Chicago White Sox from 1992-95, Lamont returned to the Pirates as a coach in 1996 before becoming manager from 1997-2000.
“It’s been 25 years. I guess I just wanted to get this black and gold on again,” Lamont said when speaking to reporters in the Pirates’ dugout. “It’s good to come back to help Donnie, but I also wanted to come back for myself, too. I wanted to be here.”
Lamont was on the Detroit Tigers’ coaching staff from 2006-17 under two managers — Leyland and Brad Ausmus. From 2009-14, he coached Kelly, who played in 544 games with the Tigers.
“When you talk about Geno and how much time he’s spent with Leyland. Like I’ve said, he’s forgotten more baseball than we all know,” said Kelly. “Having him next to me and being able to talk things through, and not just during the game; even the conversations we’ve had earlier about all kinds of things, just his input in it is tremendous.”
