Pittsburgh Pirates, Spencer Horwitz

Pittsburgh Pirates first baseman Spencer Horwitz began a rehab assignment with Double-A Altoona on Sunday afternoon. He played first base and hit leadoff for the Curve.

Horwitz drew a walk on six pitches in his first plate appearance and reached on a base hit to left field in his second at-bat. He flew out to left in his third at-bat before a planned substitution after five innings.

Horwitz has yet to suit up for the Pirates this season after undergoing thumb/wrist surgery in February.

The Pirates acquired Horwitz from the Cleveland Guardians in the offseason after he spent the 2024 season with the Toronto Blue Jays. Horwitz totaled 97 games for the Blue Jays with 19 doubles, 12 home runs and 40 RBIs. He played 41 games at first base and 39 at second in addition to 18 games as a designated hitter.

In Horwitz’s absence, the Pirates have primarily relied on Enmanuel Valdez at first base with Endy Rodríguez on the injured list. Jared Triolo and Matt Gorski have also spent time at the position.

Pirates’ first basemen this season have combined to slashed .188/.284/.344 with five doubles, two triples, two home runs and 10 RBIs.

Position players are permitted 20 days on a rehab assignment, so Horwitz will come back by May 17 at the latest baring any setbacks.
