Recapping Signings and Trades From a Busy Saturday
Once the lockout was officially lifted, it was expected that there would be a frenzy of free agent signings and trades as teams look to finalize their roster with spring training set to star this week. While the big-ticket names like Freddie Freeman and Carlos Correa remain on the market, Saturday produced a number of signings and trades in what was a busy day of the hot stove.
Mets acquire RHP Chris Bassitt from the A’s for RHPs JT Ginn and Adam Oller
The Mets added a very solid piece to their rotation in Bassitt, who finished 10th in the American League Cy Young race after going 12-4 with a 3.15 ERA. Ginn is a highly-regarded pitching prospect out of Mississippi State, and Oller is a former Pirates’ prospect.
Rangers acquire C Mitch Garver from the Twins for UT Isiah Kiner-Falefa and RHP Ronny Henriquez
Texas needed a catcher and good a good offensive one in Garver. Garver blasted 13 homers in 68 games last year with the Twins. Kiner-Falefa gives Minnesota a really nice versatile piece who will likely start at short stop. Henriquez is a 5’10 pitcher who reached Double-A last year.
Blue Jays sign LHP Yuesi Kikuchi to a three-year $36M deal
Toronto added another piece to their rotation giving them one of the better ones in the American League. Kikuchi was an All-Star last year with the Mariners but scuffled some down the stretch.
White Sox sign UT Josh Harrison to a one-year $5.5M deal and RHP Joe Kelly to a two-year deal
The White Sox made a coupe additions on Saturday as the team looks to defend their division title. Harrison had a solid season last year between the Nationals and A’s, and will get a shot at second base for Chicago. The 33-year-old Kelly had a sub-3 ERA last year with the Dodgers. Both deals come with club options.
Rockies sign RHP Alex Colome, SS Jose Iglesias to one-year deals
The Rockies added a couple pieces tot he mix on Saturday. Iglesias split the season between the Angels and Red Sox. Colome has long been a solid relief option, spending 2021 with the Twins.
Astros sign UT Niko Goodrum to a one-year $2.1M deal
Goodrum spent the last four seasons with Detroit. He heads to Houston as an intriguing bench option in a deal that allows him to earn some incentives.
Phillies sign RHP Jeurys Familia to a one-year $6M deal
The Phillies added to their bullpen by signing Familia, who has pitched 10 seasons with the division-rival Mets and made a pit stop in Oakland. Familia had a 3.94 ERA in just shy of 60 innings last season.
Angels re-sign C Kurt Suzuki, Orioles sign C Robinson Chirinos, Guardians sign C Luke Maile
The catching market got moving yesterday as the trio listed above all signed one-year pacts. The Pirates will need to add another backstop at some point with only one catcher on the 40-man roster in Roberto Perez.
