Rays Claim Yu Chang Off Waivers From Pirates

Published

on

Infielder Yu Chang has been claimed off waivers by the Rays, the team announced. The Pirates had designated Chang for assignment on the last day of June.

The Pirates acquired Chang from Cleveland on May 30 for cash considerations. In 18 games with Pittsburgh, Chang struggled to a .167/.286/.262 slash line in 49 at-bats. He recorded one double, one homer and drove in a pair of runs.

Once a fairly highly-regarded prospect in the Guardians organization, Chang hasn’t been able to carve out a consistent role as a Major Leaguer.

The 26-year old Chang will look to find a home with the Rays on their Major League squad as he is out of minor league options. Tampa Bay is currently in a playoff chase with a record of 43-37.
