Pirates Trade: Bucs Land Recently-DFA’d Pitcher From Red Sox

The Pittsburgh Pirates are acquiring their second right-hander pitcher of the week. After trading for right-hander Brett de Geus from the Toronto Blue Jays, the Pirates dipped back into the American League East and are landing right-hander Chase Shugart from the Boston Red Sox, according to FanSided’s Robert Murray. Shugart had been designated for assignment by the Red Sox on Wednesday.
In return, the Pirates are sending right-handed pitching prospect Matt McShane to Boston. McShane was drafted by the Pirates in the 13th round of last year’s draft but has yet to make his professional debut.
The 28-year-old Shugart made his MLB debut this season with the Red Sox and totaled six appearances out of the bullpen. In 8.2 innings, he allowed four runs on eight hits with three walks and eight strikeouts.
Shugart spent most of the season in Triple-A Worcester where he went 6-2 with a 4.46 ERA in 70.2 innings across 36 appearances/five starts. He struck out 80 batters and walked 32.
Shugart began his career as a starting pitcher but was moved to the bullpen in 2022. In his minor-league career, he has gone 27-19 with a 4.68 ERA and 10 saves in 163 appearances/50 starts.
The right-hander’s deep arsenal includes sweeper, cutter, sinker, changeup and a four-seam fastball. As with de Geus, Shugart has minor-league options remaining.
The Red Sox drafted Shugart in the 12th round of the 2018 draft out of the University of Texas.
