Hunter Stratton, Pittsburgh Pirates

The start of spring training is only a month away and the Pittsburgh Pirates announced 13 non-roster invitees who will be joining the club in Bradenton.

C Abrahan Gutierrez

Guttierez spent the bulk of last season in Double-A Altoona where he hit .252 with a .605 OPS and 21 RBIs in 44 games. He attended spring training with the Pirates last year and started at catcher in the Spring Breakout game.

RHP Carson Fulmer

Don’t let his 0-5 record from last season with the Angels fool you, Fulmer pitched pretty well. The right-hander made 37 appearances/eight starts in 2024 and posted a 4.15 ERA with 81 strikeouts in 86.2 innings pitched. He was with the Pirates’ organization in 2020 but didn’t make an appearance.

1B Darick Hall

Hall spent the 2024 season with the Phillies’ Triple-A affiliate where he slashed .236/.320/.387 with 17 doubles, 16 home runs and 72 RBIs in 114 games. The 29-year-old has played in 59 big-league games and has a .700 OPS with 20 extra-base hits including 10 home runs.

OF Bryce Johnson

Johnson slashed .289/.407/.431 with 20 stolen bases in Triple-A last season. He appeared in a career-high 47 games in the Major Leagues with the Padres last season where he hit .206. The 29-year-old has experience at all three outfield spots.

RHP Isaac Mattson

Mattson appeared in three games with the Pirates last season and allowed three runs on one hit, three walks and six strikeouts in 5.1 innings. The right-hander went 7-2 with a 3.17 ERA, four saves and 89 strikeouts in 71 innings across 37 appearances between Double-A and Triple-A.

INF Malcom Nuñez

Nuñez spent the 2024 campaign with Triple-A Indianapolis and hit .250 with 21 doubles, 11 home runs and 65 RBIs in 128 games. The Pirates acquired Nuñez from the Cardinals along with Johan Oviedo at the trade deadline in 2022.

RHP Tanner Rainey

Rainey, 32, has spent seven seasons in the big leagues and has a career 5-10 record with a 5.23 ERA, 15 saves and 236 strikeouts in 189.1 innings. Last season with the Nationals, the right-hander posted a 4.76 ERA in 50 appearances out of the bullpen.

RHP Yohan RamĂrez

RamĂrez re-joined the Pirates on a minor-league deal at the beginning of spring training. The right-hander made 48 appearances with the Pirates between 2022-23 and posted a 3.76 ERA. RamĂrez split last season between a whopping four different teams and posted a 6.20 ERA/4.25 FIP with 45 strikeouts in 45 innings.

RHP Yerry RodrĂguez

RodrĂguez has spent parts of the last three seasons in the big leagues between the Rangers and Blue Jays. For his career, the 27-year-old has an 8.17 ERA in 30 appearances. He went 1-4 with a 4.50 ERA in 17 Triple-A appearances in 2024.

RHP Burch Smith

The 34-year-old Smith has spent six seasons in the big leagues. After spending two seasons pitching in Asia, Smith returned to Major League Baseball last season and went 4-1 with a 4.95 ERA and a 3.66 FIP in 50 combined appearances between the Orioles and Marlins.

INF Nick Solak

Solak, who celebrated his 30th birthday over the weekend, did not play in the big leagues in 2024 but has appeared in 255 games in his career between the Rangers, Braves and Tigers. The 2016 second-round pick has a career .252 batting average and a .700 OPS. He hit .311 in 90 games last season in Triple-A.

RHP Hunter Stratton

Stratton’s 2024 season was cut short due to a knee injury on a freak play but the Pirates re-signed the right-hander to a minor-league deal after non-tendering him earlier in the offseason. Stratton made 36 appearances with Pittsburgh last season and went 2-1 with a 3.58 ERA and one save.

RHP Eddy Yean

Yean had a bounce-back season as a reliever between Double-A Altoona and two appearances with Triple-A Indianapolis at the end of last year. Between he two levels, the 23-year-old went 7-5 with a 3.36 ERA and five saves in 48 appearances.
