Pirates Spring Preview: Keller Takes the Mound in Home Opener vs. Orioles
Mitch Keller recently signed a five-year extension with the Pittsburgh Pirates. He was also named the Pirates’ opening day starter by manager Derek Shelton. Quite a week, I’d say.
For now, Keller will have his first tune-up in the Pirates’ Grapefruit League home opener against the Baltimore Orioles at LECOM Park in Bradenton at 1:05 ET.
Last season, Keller was named an All-Star for the first time in his career. He finished the 2023 campaign 13-9 with a 4.21 ERA across 32 starts. He set the Pirates’ franchise record for most strikeouts by a right-handed pitcher in a single season with 210.
As for who Keller will have behind him, the Pirates’ lineup consists of many regulars for their first home game of 2024 spring training in Bradenton.
Pittsburgh Pirates Lineup
- Oneil Cruz SS
- Bryan Reynolds LF
- Ke’Bryan Hayes 3B
- Jack Suwinski CF
- Rowdy Tellez 1B
- Yasmani Grandal C
- Connor Joe RF
- Liover Peguero 2B
- Nick Gonzales DH
There are plenty of storylines to follow, including Cruz being back at shortstop for the first time since his injury. The second base competition between Peguero and Gonzales is also one to watch.
The Pirates will face Orioles left-hander Cole Irvin, who will be the starter after wrapping up his first season in Baltimore in 2023.
The game will be broadcasted on Sportsnet Pittsburgh and can be heard on 93.7 The Fan.
