Pirates Spring Game Recap: Davis Collects Two Hits, Olivares Triples Home Pair in Loss to Twins

The Pittsburgh Pirates opened up their 2024 Grapefruit League schedule with a 5-3 loss to the Minnesota Twins at Hammond Stadium in Fort Myers.

Edward Olivares tripled home a pair of runs in the third inning to tie the game 2-all after the Twins scored twice off of Bailey Falter in the second.

In the bottom of the sixth, Kyle Nicolas surrendered a three-run home run to Dalton Shuffield to put the Twins back on top 5-2.

Prospect Matt Fraizer got a run back for the Pirates in the top of the seventh with a run-scoring single, making the score the finally tally of 5-3.

The Pirates had two runners on in the top of the ninth inning with nobody out but failed to bring either around to score.

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES

  • Henry Davis started at catcher and went 2 for 3 with a pair of singles and a run scored. Jake Lamb and Gilberto Celestino also went 2 for 3.
  • Edward Olivares drove in two runs with an RBI triple to center field. He finished 1 for 3.
  • Starting pitcher Bailey Falter allowed two runs on four hits in two innings pitched. He didn’t walk a batter and struck out three.
  • Pitching prospect Jared Jones threw a scoreless inning in relief of Falter and was clocked as high as 99 mph on the radar gun.
  • Left-hander Jose Hernandez struck out three and walked one in a scoreless fifth inning.
  • Josh Fleming, Michael Plassmeyer and Hunter Stratton all threw scoreless innings out of the bullpen.

The Pittsburgh Pirates play the Baltimore Orioles in their home opener at LECOM Park on Sunday. First pitch: 1:05 ET. Mitch Keller, who was announced as the Pirates’ opening day starter after inking a five-year extension with the team, will make his spring debut.
