Pirates Spring Game Recap: Henry Davis Homers Again in 7-3 Win Over Tigers

Henry Davis, Pittsburgh Pirates

Henry Davis continued his stellar spring for the Pittsburgh Pirates in their 7-3 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Saturday in Lakeland.

Davis belted his second home run in Grapefruit League play. His first-inning solo shot gave the Pirates (3-5) an early 1-0 lead.

The Tigers (4-4) took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning after scoring a pair of runs off of Colin Holderman, but the lead was short-lived.

In the fifth, Jake Lamb plated Canaan Smith-Njigba on a groundout and Alika Williams put the Pirates ahead by a run with an RBI single. With the bases loaded, Davis drew a walk and Jack Suwinski followed with a two-run single to center field.

Prospect Matt Gorski gave the Pirates an insurance run in the top of the ninth with a 421-foot solo home run.

  • Roansy Contreras made his second start of the spring. He didn’t allow a run in 2.1 innings, gave up one hit, walked three and struck out one.
  • NRI Chase Anderson made his spring debut and pitched two scoreless innings. He walked two and struck out a batter.
  • Henry Davis went 1 for 2 with a home run, two RBIs, two runs scored and a walk. Jack Suwinski finished 1 for 3 with a pair of RBIs.
  • Nick Gonzales went 1 for 3 with a run scored and is now hitting .308 (4 for 13) this spring.
  • Canaan Smith-Njigba drew three walks and scored a run. He became the first Pirates’ player since Will Craig in 2019 to draw three walks in a spring training game.
