Pirates Officially Recall Roansy Contreras, Activate Tyler Heineman
Prior to Wednesday’s game against the Boston Red Sox, the Pittsburgh Pirates announced that they have recalled right-handed pitcher Roansy Contreras from Triple-A Indianapolis and activated catcher Tyler Heineman from the 10-day IL.
Contreras will get the start for the Pirates on Wednesday night.
To make room on the roster, catcher Jose Godoy was optioned to Triple-A and right-hander Austin Brice was designated for assignment.
This will be the third stint for Contreras with the Bucs this season. In 12 appearances (nine starts), the 22-year-old has posted a 3.78 ERA with 50 strikeouts across 50 innings. Despite just 12 appearances, Contreras is tied for fourth on the team with three wins.
Heineman returns from a right groin strain that has kept him out of action since Aug. 4. The backstop has appeared in 35 games this year with Pittsburgh, totaling a .204 batting average with three doubles and six RBIs.
Defensively, Heineman has been responsible for three defensive runs saved and has caught 30% of attempted base stealers.
The Pirates claimed Godoy off waivers from the Twins earlier this month. He went hitless in seven at-bats and drove in one run.
Brice tossed two scoreless innings in Tuesday’s 5-3 loss to the Red Sox. Brice appeared in four games for the big league club this season across two stints.
