It was an off day for the Surprise Saguaros, the Arizona Fall League that is rostering the Pittsburgh Pirates’ prospects on Wednesday. So, it feels like a good time to provide updates on how the Bucs’ farmhands are performing.

There are currently eight Pirates’ prospects participating in the AFL this year and all eight have seen varying degrees of game time.

As a team, the Saguaros are performing well and currently sit in first place with a 7-1 record through their first eight games of the season.

Here’s how the young Bucs are contributing.

INF Nick Gonzales

  • .333/.381/.556, 6 for 18, two doubles, a triple, six RBIs, three runs, one steal, five games

Gonzales has been quite the run-producer for Surprise and is tied for second on the club with six runs driven in. The Arizona-native is performing well in his home state.

C Henry Davis

  • .214/.455/.429, 3 for 14, three doubles, two RBIs, five runs, two steals, five games

All three of Davis’ hits have gone for doubles. Davis has displayed strong patience at the plate as evident by drawing five walks and has flashed some speed with a pair of steals.

C Blake Sabol

  • .333/.500/.333, 2 for 6, one RBI, one run, two games

Sabol has only played sparingly but he has been on base four times in his first eight plate appearances.

INF Jacob Gonzalez

  • .000/.000/.000, 0 for 4

Gonzalez has played the least amount of the four Pirates’ position player prospects and is still searching for his first hit.

RHP Quinn Priester

  • 0-0, 4.50 ERA, 8.0 innings, seven hits, four earned runs, four walks, eight strikeouts, two starts

Priester’s first start did not go well but he did much better his second time out. In his latest start, Priester allowed two runs in five innings and punched out five.

RHP Colin Selby

  • 0-0, 6.00 ERA, 3.0 innings, five hits, two earned runs, one walk, three strikeouts, three appearances

Selby has made three appearances which is tied for a team-high.

LHP Omar Cruz

  • 1-0, 2.45 ERA, 3.2 innings, two hits, one earned run, four walks, three strikeouts, two appearances

Cruz is the lone Pirates’ pitching prospect who has recorded a win for the Saguaros so far.

RHP Tahnaj Thomas

  • 0-0, 12.00 ERA, 3.0 innings, two hits, four earned runs, two walks, one strikeout, two appearances

It’s been tough sledding for Thomas through his first couple outings.
