Pirates Place Nick Gonzales on 10-Day Injured List
The Pittsburgh Pirates have placed second baseman Nick Gonzales on the 10-day injured list with a left groin strain. Gonzales left Saturday’s loss in Arizona after getting injured while running to first base.
To take his spot on the roster, the Pirates recalled infielder Alika Williams from Triple-A Indianapolis.
Gonzales made his season debut with the Pirates on May 10 after he was brought up from Indianapolis. Through 65 games this season, the 25-year-old has slashed .258/.293/.387 with 13 doubles, two triples, five home runs and 39 RBIs in 65 games.
The Pirates’ second baseman has developed a knack for providing some late-game heroics this season, including a pair of walk-off hits. Gonzales delivered a walk-off single against the Giants on May 21 and did the same to the Phillies on July 19.
Since being recalled from Indianapolis, Gonzales has played 61 games at second base and has a .990 fielding percentage and four outs above average. He’s also played three games at short and two at second base.
This will be the third stint with Pittsburgh this season for Williams. In 23 games with the Pirates on the season, Williams has hit .210 with a .525 OPS and two triples. With Indianapolis, Williams has hit a much more impressive .327 with an .815 OPS.
The slick-fielding Williams has big-league experience at both middle infield positions with most of his experience coming at shortstop.
Jared Triolo is starting at second base for the Pirates in Sunday’s series finale against the Diamondbacks. In addition to Triolo and Williams, Pittsburgh also has Ji Hwan Bae to fill in at second.
