The Pittsburgh Pirates belted three home runs and collected 15 hits to edge the Minnesota Twins 10-9 in a high-scoring affair at PNC Park on Saturday evening.
Scoring Plays
Bottom 1st, 1-0 PIT: Spencer Horwitz led off the bottom of the first with his seventh home run of the season, a 408-foot blast to right field off Twins starter Bailey Ober (6-3).
Top 2nd, 1-1: The Twins (27-32) tied the game on a Victor Caratini double to left field off Mitch Keller. Jake Mangum tried to make a diving grab but came up short.
Bottom 2nd, 7-1 PIT: Mangum’s first homer of the year — a solo shot off Ober — sparked a six-run inning. Later in the inning, Nick Gonzales plated two with a base hit to right. Oneil Cruz capped things off with his second homer in as many days, a three-run shot to center.
Top 3rd, 7-2 MIN: The Twins started to mount a comeback off Keller and the Pirates (31-28) on a Clemens RBI triple to center field.
Top 4th, 7-7: Minnesota tied the game with a five-run fourth against Keller. Tristan Gray doubled home a pair of runs, and later in the inning, Josh Bell lined his own two-run double to left field. Clemens came through again with an RBI single to right.
Bottom 5th, 8-7 PIT: Mangum plated Konnor Griffin from second base with a single to left field. Griffin used his speed to just barely beat a strong throw home.
Bottom 7th, 10-7 PIT: The Pirates tacked on two more off the Twins bullpen to extend their lead. Jared Triolo looped an RBI single into right field and Bryan Reynolds hit a sacrifice fly to right with the bases loaded.
Top 8th, 10-9 PIT: The Twins loaded the bases against Mason Montgomery, who walked in a run before Bell plated another with an RBI groundout to first base to cut the deficit to one.
Key Moments
With two in scoring position and two outs, the Pirates turned to Gregory Soto to face Kody Clemens to protect a one-run lead. Clemens hit a sharp grounder to second baseman Tyler Callihan, who made a nice back-handed play for the final out of the inning.
Soto went back out of the the ninth and earned his seventh save of the season. Jake Mangum ran a long way to deep left-center to secure the second out with the tying run on first base.
