Pirates’ Jared Jones Leaves Start After Taking Line Drive to Elbow

In his fifth start back from the injured list, Jared Jones exited his outing for the Pirates against the Rockies on Sunday afternoon after being hit by a lined drive on his surgically-repaired right elbow.
With two outs in the bottom of the third inning, Rockies first baseman TJ Rumfield hit an 87.9 mph line drive back to the mound. Jones was unable to get out of the way in time, and the ball struck him on the back of the right elbow.
The ball deflected off Jones and was fielded by third baseman Nick Gonzales, who threw to first base for the final out of the inning. Yohan Ramírez replaced Jones on the mound in the bottom of the fourth inning.
The Pirates say Jones is being evaluated and treated by the club’s medical staff, and they will provide additional updates when available.
Jones allowed one run on one hit with two walks and three strikeouts prior to leaving the game. He threw 45 pitches/28 strikes.
UPDATE: Initial images of Jones’ elbow came back negative. He will be reassessed by the team medical staff in Pittsburgh on Monday.
