PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Pirates have been without the services of shortstop Konnor Griffin since he was placed on the 10-day injured list on May 31 with a low-grade forearm muscle strain.

Griffin started throwing plyos over the weekend and has been taking ground balls at short, but has not yet been cleared to throw. The 20-year-old said that he believes he will start throwing on Wednesday, but Pirates Director of Sports Medicine Todd Tomczyk said he will first have to get cleared by the team physicians.

“He is scheduled to see our team physician in the coming days for hopefully clearance to begin a formal throwing program,” said Tomczyk. “He’s been clear to hit from day one, so all in all, we’re very encouraged with how Konnor is coming along.”

Tomczyk added that Griffin’s injury is “resolving,” and that surgery is not currently under consideration.

“All of the clinical exams with subsequent imaging that our team physicians did, that the second opinion physicians did, all the ligament is stable, so that is a very important point.”

Griffin appeared in 51 games prior to landing on the IL and carries a .270/327/.402 with nine doubles, two triples, four home runs, 22 RBI and 14 stolen bases. He’s played 49 games at shortstop and two at designated hitter.

Griffin is eligible to return on Wednesday but will spend more time on the IL than the minimum 10 days, which was known after meeting with Dr. Keith Meister in Houston last week.
