Pittsburgh Pirates 2024 first-round draft pick Konnor Griffin stuck around the city with his family after signing his contract on Wednesday.

On Friday, Griffin took batting practice at PNC Park prior to the Pirates matchup with the Arizona Diamondbacks.

“It was awesome,” Griffin said on the experience. “Just being around the big-league guys, pretty cool. Hopefully I can be up here soon. I really enjoyed it.”

Griffin was selected by the Pirates with the ninth pick in this year’s draft out of high school in Florence, Miss. The 18-year-old was committed to play collegiately at LSU but signed for an overslot deal worth north of $6.5 million to begin his professional career with the Pirates’ organization.

Based off of MLB Pipeline’s draft rankings, Griffin was the top prep prospect available in this year’s draft. He was the first high school player to come off the board. Griffin has five-tool potential led by his elite sprint speed and exceptionally strong arm.

Griffin ranks as the second-best Pirates’ prospect and the 82nd-best prospect overall, according to Baseball America’s updated rankings.

Up next, Griffin will head to Bradenton, Fla., for the start of his career with the Pirates. As a high school prospect, Griffin’s road to the big leagues will in all likelihood take a few years. But for a little while on Friday, he got a taste of what that day will look like, whenever that day comes to fruition.
