The Pittsburgh Pirates have designated Deigo Castillo for assignment. The move clears a roster spot for catcher Austin Hedges, whose one-year deal became official on Tuesday.

Castillo was acquired from the New York Yankees alongside Hoy Park in exchange for Clay Holmes during the 2021 trade deadline. Now, both Castillo and Park have been DFA’d this winter by the Bucs.

Castillo made his major league debut with the Pirates this last season after cracking the Opening Day roster.

In 96 games with Pittsburgh, Castillo combined to hit .206 with a .633 OPS. The rookie hit 13 doubles, 11 home runs and drove in 29 runs.

Defensively, the 25-year old played all over the field, appearing in games at all four infield positions, right field and even a couple appearances on the mound.
