Jason Delay’s Seventh-Inning Double Lifts Pirates Over Yankees 3-2

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Pirates capitalized on the game of inches to take down the New York Yankees 3-2 on Sunday afternoon at PNC Park to salvage the three-game series.

With the score tied 2-2 in the seventh inning, Jason Delay hit a grounder off the third base bag, allowing Jared Triolo to score from second base and give the Pirates (70-80) the lead.

It was in the fourth inning that the Pirates first had a close call go their way. Playing against his former team, Miguel Andujar hit an opposite-field home run off the right field foul pole to extend the Pittsburgh’s lead to 2-0.

Liover Peguero delivered a two-out single in the third inning, plating Jared Triolo, to give the Pirates a 1-0 advantage.

The Yankees drew even in the sixth inning when Estevan Florial singled for the Yankees’ first hit of the afternoon and DJ LeMahieu drove him in with a double.

Anthony Volpe connected on a solo home run for the Yankees (76-74) in the top of the seventh to tie the game at 2-all, before Delay put the Pirates ahead for good.

David Bednar earned his 36th save of the season and struck out three in a scoreless ninth inning.

Key Moment 

Delay’s double barley stayed fair and kicked off the bag far enough into left field to allow the winning run to come across.

Star of the Game

Entering play, Triolo had two doubles on the season, but he matched his season total with a pair of two-baggers and scored twice.

Stat to Know

In the fourth inning, Carlos Rodón struck out Ke’Bryan Hayes. It was the 1,000th career of Rodón’s career which made him the 17th active left-hander with 1,000+ strikeouts.

Noteworthy

  • This is the first time the Pirates have reached 70 wins in a season since finishing 2018, when they went 82-79.
  • Triolo (2 for 3) and Liover Peguero (2 for 4) both finished the game with two hits.
  • Colin Selby and Andre Jackson combined to carry a combined no-hit bid into the sixth inning before Florial’s single.
  • The start of the game was briefly delayed for 16 minutes due to rain.
