Reynolds, Lowe Power Pirates Past Athletics for Bounce-Back Win

A day after an ugly loss, Bryan Reynolds hit a pair of home runs and Brandon Lowe hit the go-ahead blast to lift the Pirates to a 6-5 win over the Athletics at Sutter Health Park on Tuesday night.

Scoring Plays

Bottom 1st 4-0 ATH: With the bases loaded and two outs, Zack Gelof hit a grounder to first baseman Spencer Horwitz, who made a diving stop but delivered an errant throw to Mitch Keller, who was covering first base. All three runners came around to score, and the Athletics (36-37) added on another on a Lawrence Butler RBI double.

Top 4th, 4-1 ATH: With runners on the corners and one out, Nick Gonzales got the Pirates (37-37) on the board when he brought home a run on a groundout to first base with Jack Perkins on the mound.

Top 6th, 4-3 ATH: Bryan Reynolds led off the inning with a 408-foot solo home run to center, his ninth of the season. Later in the inning, Endy Rodríguez singled home Ryan O’Hearn to bring the Pirates within one.

Bottom 6th, 5-3 ATH: With one out, Gelof hit a 360-foot home run down the left field line to get one of the runs back for the Athletics.

Top 7th, 5-5: Tie game. Reynolds connected on his second home run of the game, a two-run home run off Hogan Harris with two outs.

Top 9th, 6-5 PIT: Brandon Lowe hit hits 18th home run of the season to give the Pirates their first lead of the game. His solo shot to left off Elvis Alvarado was lined 371 feet.

Key Moments

The Athletics had runners on first and second with one out and Gregory Soto fell behind Tyler Soderstrom 3-0 before battling back to strike him out looking. Soto then retired Jacob Wilson to end the game.

Player of the Game

Bryan Reynolds homered from each side of the plate for the fourth time in his career. He finished 4 for 5 with two homers, three RBI and three runs. It was his first four-hit game since May 27, 2025 against the Diamondbacks.

Stat to Know

After recording a season-high seven strikeouts, Mitch Keller now has 902 strikeouts in his career. He passed Pirates Hall of Famer Steve Blass (896) for the seventh on the team’s all-time strikeout list.
