Pirates AFL Updates: Johnson Doubles, Curtis Gets Wild

2022 Pirates first round pick Termarr Johnson takes a swing.

Pittsburgh Pirates prospect Termarr Johnson finished 1 for 4 with a double and a run scored in the Scottsdale Scorpions 8-6 win over the Salt River Rafters in the Arizona Fall League on Tuesday night.

Johnson whacked a double to left-center in the top of the fifth and scored on a sacrifice fly later in the inning after advancing to third on a wild pitch.

Through his first eight games in the AFL, Johnson is slashing .300/.462/.600 with two doubles, two triples, a home run and three RBIs. His 1.062 OPS ranks 13th in the league.

The only other Pirates’ position player prospect in the Scorpions’ lineup was Sammy Siani, and it was a rare forgettable night for the left fielder. Siani went 0 for 5 with a couple of strikeouts in the win, dropping his average to .367.

On the mound, right-handed pitcher Khristian Curtis made his third appearance and struggled. Curtis only recorded one out but allowed five runs (four earned) to come around to score. The right-hander struggled with command and issued three free passes. He also allowed an inside-the-park home run to Colorado Rockies prospect Skyler Messinger.

But Scottsdale rallied for four unanswered runs over the final three innings to get Curtis off the hook for the loss.

Up next for the Scorpions (5-7) is a game against the Peoria Javelinas (3-9) on Wednesday afternoon.
