Pirates Announce 2024 Opening Day Roster; Four More Players to Start Year on IL

The 2024 regular season for the Pittsburgh Pirates begins on Thursday. Mitch Keller will be on the mound against Jesús Luzardo and the Miami Marlins at loanDepot Park.

As the Pirates shift their focus from spring training to the regular season, the Pirates have announced their expected opening day roster as well as a number of roster moves.

Pitchers:

  • RHP David Bednar, LHP Ryan Borucki, LHP Aroldis Chapman, RHP Roansy Contreras, LHP Bailey Falter, LHP Josh Fleming, LHP Marco Gonzales, RHP Jared Jones, RHP Mitch Keller, RHP Luis Ortiz, LHP Martín Pérez, RHP Ryder Ryan, RHP Hunter Stratton

Position Players:

  • INF Oneil Cruz, C Henry Davis, C Jason Delay, INF Ke’Bryan Hayes, INF/OF Connor Joe, OF/DH Andrew McCutchen, OF Edward Olivares, OF Bryan Reynolds, OF Jack Suwinski, OF Michael A. Taylor, 1B/DH Rowdy Tellez, INF Jared Triolo, INF Alika Williams

Roster Moves

The Pittsburgh Pirates have optioned right-handed pitcher Quinn Priester to Triple-A Indianapolis. Priester had been in competition for one of the open spots in the Pirates’ rotation.

Additionally, the Pirates reassigned outfielder Billy McKinney, infielder/outfielder Jake Lamb, outfielder Gilberto Celestino and catcher Grant Koch as well as pitchers Brent Honeywell Jr., Eric Lauer, Domingo Germán and Wily Peralta to minor-league camp.

To The Injured List

Catcher Yasmani Grandal, who was signed to a one-year contract at the onset of spring training, will begin the year on the 10-day injured list with plantar fasciitis. Ji Hwan Bae, who has been battling a hip injury, will join Grandal on the 10-day IL for the start of the regular season.

A pair of relief pitchers will hit the 15-day injured list to begin the season. Right-hander Colin Holderman, who had been hospitalized due to a virus. Fellow righty Carmen Mlodzinski is throwing, but won’t be ready for opening day with right forearm tightness.
