Pirates Sparked By Two Homers, Blank Mets to Avoid Sweep

Matt Gorski and Jared Triolo each homered and five pitchers for the Pittsburgh Pirates combined to throw a shutout in a 4-0 win over the New York Mets at Citi Field on Wednesday night.

How We Got There

In the top of the second inning, Matt Gorksi crushed a two-run shot to left field to put the Pirates (15-29) ahead 2-0.

Three innings later, Jared Triolo connected on his second homer of the year, a two-run shot to left to extend Pittsburgh’s lead.

Bailey Falter, Chase Shugart, Tanner Rainey, David Bednar and Dennis Santana combined to shut out the Mets (28-16). It was the Pirates’ fourth shutout win of the season.

Key Moment

Manager Don Kelly opted to go to the bullpen with the bases loaded and two outs in the fourth inning. On the first pitch from Chase Shugart (2-3), José Azócar flew out to center to end the threat.

Star of the Game

The Pirates’ bullpen held the Mets scoreless on three hits in 5.1 innings pitched. Collectively, they didn’t issue a walk and struck out three.

  • Alexander Canario extended his hitting streak to six games. He’s batting .428 (9 for 17) during that span. Canario also has hits in nine of his 10 games played this month.
  • Oneil Cruz (lower back) was not in the Pirates’ lineup for a fourth-straight game.
  • The Pirates claimed INF/OF Michael Helman off waivers from the Cardinals. INF Enmanuel Valdez was transferred to the 60-day IL.
  • C/1B Endy Rodríguez started a rehab assignment with Triple-A Indianapolis.
