Pirates Prospects, Matt Gorski

The Pittsburgh Pirates have made a pair of roster additions ahead of Thursday’s game against the Los Angeles Angels.

The Pirates have selected the contract of outfielder Matt Gorski and recalled right-handed pitcher Mike Burrows. Both players join the team from Triple-A Indianapolis.

In 18 games with Indianapolis this season, the 27-year-old slashed .300/.325/.529 with seven doubles, three home runs, 14 RBIs and two stolen bases.

A second-round pick in the 2019 draft out of Indiana University, Gorski has played parts of six seasons in the Pirates’ system. In 465 career games, Gorski has hit .246/.312/.473 with 90 home runs and 286 RBIs.

Gorski has played all three outfield spots in his career — 212 games in center, 101 in right and 83 in left. He’s also played 51 games at first base including three times this year.

Burrows made his big-league debut in the Pirates’ 2024 season finale against the Yankees. The right-hander got the win after pitching 3.1 innings in relief and allowed a pair of runs on two hits, three walks and two strikeouts.

The 25-year-old made four starts this season with Indianapolis and went 0-1 with a 4.30 ERA. In 14.2 innings, he allowed seven runs on 12 hits with seven walks and 13 strikeouts.

Pirates Corresponding Moves

To make room on the roster, the Pirates have optioned outfielder Jack Suwinski to Indianapolis. Through 16 games this season, Suwinski has slumped to a .128/.244/.154 batting line with no home runs and only one RBI. He hasn’t been in the Pirates’ starting lineup since Saturday.

To make room on the 40-man roster, the Pirates have transferred left-handed pitcher Tim Mayza to the 60-day injured list on Saturday.

The Pirates placed Mayza on the 15-day IL with a left lat strain. Mayza, who signed as a free agent this offseason, posted a 2.89 ERA through seven appearances to start the season.

Additionally, the Pirates have placed left-handed starter Justin Lawrence on the 15-day injured list with right elbow inflammation, manager Derek Shelton told reporters, including Alex Stumpf of MLB.com.

Lawrence was off to a sensation start in his first season with the Pirates. In 11 appearances, the right-hander posted a 0.79 ERA with 15 strikeouts in 11.1 innings.
