Pirates Roster Moves: Endy Rodríguez Lands on IL; Reliever Recalled

The Pittsburgh Pirates will be without the services of catcher/first baseman Endy Rodríguez after placing him on the 10-day injured list with a right index finger laceration, according to manager Derek Shelton.
Rodríguez exited Monday’s game against the Washington Nationals in the top of the first inning after taking a pitch from Paul Skenes that hit James Wood in the foot ricocheted off his throwing hand. He received several stiches after leaving the game.
Rodríguez has totaled 50 plate appearances with the Pirates this season and is batting .178/.260/.244 with three doubles and a pair of RBIs. He’s appeared in 11 games at first base and six games behind the plate.
In Rodríguez’s absence, the Pirates will rely on Joey Bart and Henry Davis behind the plate, though Bart has missed the last three games due to a lower back injury. Enmanuel Valdez should get the bulk of the reps at first base, though manager Derek Shelton said following Monday’s win that Adam Frazier could also be an option.
To take Rodríguez’s spot on the roster, the Pirates are recalling right-handed reliever Chase Shugart from Triple-A Indianapolis. Pittsburgh had been operating a man short in the bullpen after Shugart was optioned to make room for Davis on Saturday.
Shugart made three appearances prior to getting sent down and tossed 3.2 scoreless innings pitched with a pair of strikeouts.
Additionally, the Pirates are adding catcher Abrahan Gutierrez to their taxi squad and he’s at PNC Park.
Gutierrez has gone 5 for 13 in five games with Triple-A Indianapolis this season. In eight minor-leagues seasons, he carries a .264/.348/.376 batting line in 446 games.
