The Pittsburgh Pirates are placing right-handed pitcher Colin Holderman on the 15-day injured list with right thumb inflammation. To take his spot on the active roster, right-hander Isaac Mattson will join the club from Triple-A Indianapolis.

Holderman worked 1.1 innings out of the bullpen in the Pirates’ 7-1 loss to the Cincinnati Reds on Monday night and allowed three runs on three hits and a pair of walks.

On the season, Holderman has totaled 14 appearance and is 0-1 with a 9.00 ERA, 11 walks and 11 strikeouts in 15.0 innings. The 29-year-old missed time last month due to a right knee sprain.

Mattson, meanwhile, totaled 16 relief appearances with Indianapolis this season, where he went 2-0 with a 2.50 ERA. In 18.0 innings, he allowed 12 hits, walked five and struck out 22. At the time of his contract getting selected, Mattson was tied for fourth in the International League with four saves.

Last season with the Pirates, Mattson mad three appearances and allowed three runs in 5.1 innings. The now 29-year-old pitched collegiately at the University of Pittsburgh.

To make room for Mattson on the 40-man roster, the Pirates transferred infielder Nick Gonzales to the 60-day injured list. Gonzales has been out of action since Mar. 28 with a non-displaced left ankle fracture.

Gonzales went 1 for 3 with a home run in the season opener in Miami but exited early before landing on the injured list the next day. He’s played in two rehab games with Indianapolis.
