Pittsburgh Pirates, Canaan Smith-Njigba

The Pittsburgh Pirates have recalled outfielder Canaan Smith-Njigba from Triple-A Indianapolis prior to Friday’s game against the New York Mets. In a corresponding move, right-hander Chase De Jong was designated for assignment.

This will be the second stint with the Pirates this season for Smith-Njigba, who was on the club’s opening day roster.

In 14 games with the Pirates. Smith-Njigba hit .125 with a .435 OPS, two doubles, a triple and five runs driven in. The 24-year-old had more success in Triple-A Indianapolis, where he posted an .866 OPS and slugged seven homers in 28 games.

De Jong had his fair share of struggles this season with Pittsburgh. In six appearances, De Jong had a 13.50 OPS across 11.1 innings. In his last appearance against the Oakland A’s, the righty surrendered six runs and three homers in 2.0 innings.
