The Pittsburgh Pirates have made a number of roster moves for their first spring cuts following their 7-3 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday.

Infielder Andrés Alvarez, along with pitching prospects Anthony Solometo, Thomas Harrington, and Bubba Chandler, have been reassigned to minor-league camp. Additionally left-hander Jackson Wolf has been optioned to Double-A Altoona.

Alvarez did not appear in a spring training game with the Pirates this year. In 96 games with Altoona last season, the 26-year-old registered a .630 OPS with 18 doubles, a triple, eight home runs and 35 RBIs.

Solometo and Harrington both made one spring appearance and pitched a scoreless inning with a strikeout. Chandler made his spring debut in Monday’s game agaisnt the Rays and tossed a perfect seventh inning.

Solometo and Chandler are both considered top 100 prospects for the 2024 season according to MLB Pipeline. Solometo is ranked No. 82 and Chandler checks in at No. 93.

All three pitchers were listed in the Pirates’ top six prospects on Pipeline’s most recent team rankings.

Since Wolf is on the Pirates’ 40-man roster, the Pirates had to option him to the minor leagues as opposed to reassigning him to minor-league camp as they did with the others.

Just like with the three other pitching prospects, Wolf made one appearance this spring and pitched a scoreless inning out of the bullpen. He struck out a pair of batters and walked one.

The Pittsburgh Pirates now have 64 players (59 active) in the major-league camp.

Among the prospects still in big-league camp are the Pirates’ top two in Termarr Johnson and Paul Skenes. Johnson is hitting .462 this spring (6 for 13) with a pair of home runs and four RBIs. Skenes has allowed one run in three innings across two appearances and has struck out three.
