Pirates Prospect Watch: Henry Davis Launches Two Homers For Altoona

Pittsburgh Pirates prospect Henry Davis had a monster game for the Double-A Altoona Curve on Sunday.

The 2021 first-overall draft pick mashed two homers, one of them measuring 460 feet. He was on base in all four of his plate appearances as he also had an RBI single and a walk.

Davis wasn’t the only Pirates’ prospect to have a pair of home runs in Sunday’s action, however. Here are the other players who stood out.

Also of note, all four affiliates were victorious. Let’s dive in.

Indianapolis (8-13)

RHP Luis Ortiz

  • Game stats: 6.0 innings, three hits, two earned run, one walk, two strikeouts
  • Season stats: 1-1, 2.31 ERA, 6er/23.1ip, 14 hits, eight walks, 20 strikeouts, five appearances/five starts

C Grant Koch

  • Game stats: 1 for 2, one home run, two RBIs, two runs, one walk, one sac fly
  • Season stats: .308/.333/.538, one home run, three RBIs, six games

Ortiz earned his first win of the season with Indianapolis’ 6-4 win over the Memphis Redbirds while Koch filled up the stat sheet and hit his first long ball of the year.

Pirates’ prospect Josh Bissonette went 3 for 4 with a triple and an RBI.

Altoona (7-7)

C Henry Davis

  • Game stats: 3 for 3, two home runs, three RBIs, two runs, one walk
  • Season stats: .267/.441/.600, one double, one triple, four home runs, 10 RBIs, four steals, 13 games

RHP Aaron Shortridge

  • Game stats: 6.0 innings, four hits, two runs (one earned), three walks, two strikeouts
  • Season stats: 1-1, 5.40 ERA, 9er/15.0ip, 16 hits, five walks, 11 strikeouts, four appearances/three starts

Davis’ big game helped propel Altoona to a 5-4 walk-off win over the Bowie Baysox. Though he didn’t get the win, Shortridge was strong in the start for the Curve.

Pirates’ prospect Lolo Sanchez was responsible for the walk-off with a sacrifice fly to center and also homered. Liover Peguero was on base twice and stole a base.

Greensboro (11-4)

CF Jase Bowen

  • Game stats: 3 for 4, two home runs, one double, two RBIs, three runs, one steal
  • Season stats: .353/.411/.706, three doubles, five home runs, 17 RBIs, four steals, 12 games

RHP Po-Yu Chen

  • Game stats: 5.0 innings, two hits, one earned run, no walks, six strikeouts
  • Season stats: 0-1, 5.27 ERA, 8er/13.2ip, 12 hits, three walks, 13 strikeouts, three appearances/three starts

Bowen’s monster season continued in Greensboro’s 4-1 win over the Greenville Drive. Chen had another strong game on the mound.

Pirates’ prospect Hudson Head doubled for the second-straight game and was on base twice. The Grasshoppers’ bullpen combined for four shutout innings.

Bradenton (10-5)

RHP J.P. Massey

  • Game stats: 5.0 innings, two hits, no runs, one walk, seven strikeouts
  • Season stats: 1-1, 3.86 ERA, 5er/11.2ip, 11 hits, five walks, 18 strikeouts, three appearances, two starts

DH Javier Rivas

  • Game stats: 2 for 4, one double, two RBIs, two runs, one walk
  • Season stats: .263/.300/.333, one double, one home run, 13 RBIs, 13 games

Massey was brilliants on the mound while Rivas continued to be a run producer for Bradenton in their 9-1 win over the Daytona Tortugas.

Top Pirates’ prospect Termarr Johnson drove in two more runs in his second game since returning from the injured list. Outfielder Jauri Custodio went 2 for 5 with a double.
