Pirates Prospect Watch: Endy Rodriguez Snaps Skid With Four Hits

Endy Rodriguez, Pirates prospects

There was a rare Monday minor league game as the Triple-A Indianapolis Indians were in action on Memorial Day.

Entering said game, Pittsburgh Pirates prospect Endy Rodriguez was hitless in his last 19 at-bats as he saw his batting average drop to .212 on the season.

The struggles are unusual for Rodriguez, who up until this season was a consistently well-above average hitter throughout his minor league career.

Perhaps Rodriguez’s season began to turn around in Monday’s game as the catcher collected four hits for the Indians.

In addition to Rodriguez, here are the other Pirates’ prospects of note from Memorial Day.

Indianapolis (24-27)

C Endy Rodriguez

  • Game stats: 4 for 5, one RBI, three runs
  • Season stats: .234/.327/.387, five doubles, two triples, four home runs, 14 RBIs, four steals, 34 games

3B Nick Gonzales

  • Game stats: 2 for 5, two doubles, two RBIs, two runs, one walk
  • Season stats: .252/.355/.430, nine doubles, three triples, four home runs, 15 RBIs, one steal, 38 games

Big games from both Rodriguez and Gonzales paved the way for a 12-6 win for the Indians over the Toledo Mud Hens.

Pirates prospect Canaan Smith-Njigba had two hits, one of which was a triple, and scored twice. Fellow outfielder Chavez Young was on base three times, scored twice and stole his 13th base of the season.

Eight of the nine players in Indianapolis’ lineup recorded a hit while eight players drove in at least one run in a well-balanced attack.
