The Pittsburgh Pirates were defeated 3-2 by the Miami Marlins in the second game of the series on Tuesday night.

After home runs from Ke’Bryan Hayes and Oneil Cruz brought them within a run, the Pirates had two runners in scoring position in the bottom of the ninth but were unable to convert.

The Pirates (27-41) will try for the series win over the Marlins (25-40) in Wednesday’s finale.

First pitch is set for 12:35 p.m. ET, and the game will be broadcast on SportsNet Pittsburgh and 100.1 FM & AM 1020.

Weather

Sunny skies and temperatures around 80 degrees. Winds SW at 9-10 mph.

LHP Bailey Falter (4-3, 3.49 ERA) Will Start for the Pirates

Falter had his first poor start in a while when he was charged with four runs on five hits in 3.2 innings on Friday night.

Though his first start of June was rocky, Falter had a stellar June and finished third among MLB starting pitchers with a 0.76 ERA across six starts.

The left-hander is 11th in the National League in batting average against (.220). Teammate Paul Skenes is first (.173).

Falter is a perfect 3-0 with a 4.08 ERA in nine starts/six appearances against the Marlins in his career.

RHP Cal Quantrill (3-6, 5.63ERA) Will Start for the Marlins

Quantrill last took the mound last Wednesday and took the loss despite only allowing a pair of runs in 5.0 innings.

The right-hander has been on a pretty nice roll of late. He’s allowed two runs or fewer in five of his last six starts and has a 2.95 ERA (6er/18.1ip) over his last four starts.

After leading the league in walks last season with the Rockies, Quantrill has only issued 17 free passes in 54.1 innings (2.8 walks per nine). Opponents, though, are hitting .300 against him.

In five appearances/four starts against the Pirates in his career, Quantrill is 1-1 with a 2.38 ERA.
