Pirates Preview: Bucs Look to Start New Streak After Shutout Loss

The Pittsburgh Pirates had their six-game winning streak end with a 6-0 loss to the Seattle Mariners on the Fourth of July.

Pirates’ pitching allowed four home runs and the offense managed only four hits, three of which came from Nick Gonzales.

The Pirates (38-51) will look to bounce back in the second game of the series on Saturday and try put an end to their road woes.

First pitch is set for 10:10 p.m. ET, and the game will be broadcast on SportsNet Pittsburgh and 93.7 The Fan.

RHP Mike Burrows (1-2, 4.15 ERA) Will Start For the Pirates

Burrows allowed one and struck out five in 4.1 innings against the New York Mets in the Pirates’ 12-1 win on Sunday.

The rookie right-hander allowed two runs or fewer in five of his six starts in June after he was charged with eight runs in 8.1 innings through his first two starts of the season.

Since the start of June, Burrows’ 2.73 ERA is 10th among National League pitchers to log at least 20 innings.

This will be his first start against Seattle.

RHP Luis Castillo (4-5, 3.55 ERA) Will Start For the Mariners

Castillo last pitched against the Texas Rangers on Sunday, when he allowed one run in six innings.

It was a good bounce-back start for Castillo, who was 0-2 with a 5.73 ERA over his last four starts entering his most recent.

Since the start of the 2023 season, only three American League pitchers have thrown more innings than Castillo (468.2) and only four of totaled more starts (80).

In 15 starts against the Pirates, Castillo is 6-5 with a 2.60 ERA.

Tidbits

  • The Pirates’ six-game winning streak was their longest of the season. They haven’t won seven games in a row since April 2023.
  • Ke’Bryan Hayes extended his hitting streak to 12 games in Friday’s loss. It’s the longest by a Pirate this season and the longest single-season streak of his career.
  • While the Pirates are 26-21 at PNC Park this season, they are just 12-30 on the road. Only the Chicago White Sox (10-35) and Colorado Rockies (11-33) have worse road records.

Strikeouts may be okay in metrics world but they are kinda boring.

I hope Nutting takes the Pirates to another city! The only other alternative is to be stuck with that loser forever!
