Pirates Place Daniel Vogelbach, Heath Hembree on IL; DFA Cam Alldred

The Pirates have officially announced that Roansy Contreras and Cal Mitchell have been brought up from Triple-A Indianapolis. To make room for both on the active roster, Daniel Vogelbach was placed on the 10-day injured list and Heath Hembree on the 15-day injured list. To make room for Mitchell on the 40-man roster, Cam Alldred was DFA’d.

Vogelbach landing on the injured list is a tough blow for the Pirates lineup that has been struggling to score runs. The lefty slugger has been off to a strong start for the Bucs with a .778 OPS and six homers in 34 games, serving primarily as the Pirates designated hitter.

Hembree, on the other hand, has struggled in his first 17 appearances out of Pittsburgh’s bullpen. His ERA currently sits at 8.10 with an even worse 8.51 FIP. He’s served up five home runs and has walked nine in 13.1 innings of work.

Alddred was up with the Pirates earlier this season and tossed a scoreless inning in his Major League debut. The 25-year-old has posted a 1.33 ERA through 10 games with Triple-A Indianapolis this season.

Contreras will make his second career start for the Pirates on Tuesday and Mitchell will make his Major League debut in right field, batting eighth.
