Pittsburgh Pirates, Travis Swaggerty

Prior to Friday’s game against the Detroit Tigers, the Pittsburgh Pirates optioned outfielder Travis Swaggerty and utility man Tucupita Marcano to Triple-A Indianapolis.

Swaggerty seemed to be in a good position to make the club’s Opening Day roster but instead will begin the year in the minor leagues.

In 19 games on the spring, Swaggerty hit .379 with a 1.161 OPS. He clubbed three home runs and was tied for the team-lead with 10 RBIs.

The 2018 first round pick made his big league debut last season with the Pirates and went 1 for 9 in five games and will now look to work his way back to Pittsburgh at some point later in the season.

Marcano was in the mix for the second base job in addition to a bench role but wasn’t able to find his groove at the plate.

He hit just .148 with a .466 OPS in 14 games. He doubled once, drove in three and swiped two bags.

There are now 38 players left in big league camp.
