Pittsburgh Pirates-Nick Gonzales

The Pittsburgh Pirates officially added infield prospect Nick Gonzales to their major-league roster, selecting his contract from Triple-A Indianapolis prior to Friday night’s game against the Marlins in Miami.

Outfielder Cal Mitchell was optioned to Indianapolis to make room on the 26-man roster. Right-hander Vince Velasquez was transferred from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day IL to clear a 40-man roster spot.

Gonzales, 24, hit .257 with 14 doubles, five triples, six home runs, 27 RBIs and an .820 OPS in 57 games with Indianapolis this season. He made 33 starts at second base, 12 at third base and seven at shortstop.

The Pirates chose Gonzales in the first round of the 2020 amateur draft with the seventh overall selection from New Mexico State. Baseball America ranks him as the organization’s 10th-best prospect.

Gonzales will wear uniform No. 39.
