Pirates Minor League Report: Konnor Griffin Adjusting to Double-A

Konnor Griffin, Pittsburgh Pirates

Pirates’ 2024 first round draft pick and MLB No. 1 prospect Konnor Griffin made his Double-A debut on Tuesday, Aug. 19, the youngest player to debut in Altoona Curve history.

Griffin picked up six hits (including a three hit game on Thursday, Aug. 21), all singles, a pair of walks and four stolen bases during his first week with the Curve, giving him a batting average of .286 and an on-base percentage of .346. He also narrowly missed a home run with a fly ball to the warning track.

Fellow Pirates first round pick Termarr Johnson made it back into the lineup for all six games after taking a fastball to the wrist the previous week. Johnson continued his hot streak at the plate despite the initially worrisome injury, going 7-for-24 with a walk and two doubles on the week.

2024 trade deadline acquisition Nick Yorke hit four doubles on the week, twice apiece on Aug. 21 and Aug. 24, while 20-year-old outfield prospect Tony Blanco Jr. homered on consecutive days in Bradenton.

Edward Florentino hit two doubles on Tuesday, Aug. 19, continuing his red-hot start in Bradenton, but landed on the 7-day injured list on Aug. 22, putting the rest of his 2025 season in jeopardy.

On the mound, the Pirates are tapering off Hunter Barco’s work load. Now at 89.2 innings pitched, well past his previous career high of 66, Barco went just three innings (52 pitches) on Tuesday, Aug. 19, fanning four batters and allowing one run.

He moved to the bullpen on Sunday, Aug. 24 and struggled, striking out four batters in 2.2 innings but allowing four runs.
