PITTSBURGH — After fighting their way back all night long, the Pittsburgh Pirates walked off the Philadelphia Phillies 5-4 on Nick Gonzales’ sacrifice fly to left in the bottom of the ninth inning on Friday night.

How We Got There

The back-and-forth affair started in the top of the first inning, when Nick Castellanos put the Phillies (37-26) ahead 1-0 with an RBI groundout.

The Pirates (24-40) evened the score in the bottom of the inning when Bryan Reynolds followed a Nick Gonzales triple with a base hit to right.

After the Phillies went back up by a run in the top of the second, Reynolds tied the game once again with a solo home run to left field in the third. For Reynolds, it was his eighth home run of the season.

The Phillies jumped ahead 4-2 in the fourth when Trea Turner singled home a pair with two outs and the bases loaded against Chase Shugart, who relieved starter Bailey Falter.

Henry Davis, who replaced Endy Rodríguez in the second inning, hit a two-run home run to left field to once again even the score.

David Bednar (1-4) earned the win after striking out the side in the ninth to cap off a great night from the bullpen.

Key Moment

Adam Frazier and Jared Triolo hit back-to-back singles to open the bottom of the ninth off Jordan Romano. Isiah Kiner-Falefa, who was trying to bunt the runners over, reached first base after the ball refused to go foul down the third base line.

After Oneil Cruz struck out, Nick Gonzales hit a fly ball to left that was plenty deep.

Star of the Game

Henry Davis was not in the original starting lineup but hit a clutch game-tying home run in the fourth. He also doubled in addition to handling five different pitchers.

Notable Performances

  • Bailey Falter: 3.2 innings, five hits, four runs, two walks, two strikeouts, 65 pitches/40 strikes
  • Henry Davis: 2 for 4, one double, one home run, two RBI, one run
  • Bryan Reynolds: 2 for 4, one home run, two RBI, one run
  • Adam Frazier: 3 for 4, one double, one run
  • Nick Gonzales: 1 for 4, one triple, one RBI, one run

Stat to Know

Bailey Falter was charged with more earned runs on Friday night (four) than he was the entire month of May (three). Falter had the third-lowest ERA in MLB in his six starts last month at 0.76 (3er/35.2ip).

Noteworthy

  • C Endy Rodríguez was removed from the game in the top of the second inning with right elbow discomfort.
  • Chase Shugart was a perfect 13 for 13 in stranding inherited runners this season before allowing two in the fourth inning.
  • David Bednar’s win snapped a stretch of nine-straight losses. His last win was on May 21 against the Giants last season.
  • The start of the game was delayed by 1 hour and 23 minutes due to rain.

Up Next

The battle of the Keystone State will be a battle of southpaws on Saturday. LHP Andrew Heaney (3-4, 3.39 ERA) will start for the Pirates. LHP Ranger Suárez (4-0, 2.72 ERA) will be on the mound for the Phillies. First pitch: 4:05 p.m. ET.

The Buccos have been a much improved watch since Shelton was fired. Shame it was at least a year too late for this group of players.

Gross negligence by the owner and GM.
